Impact
MatiBoost
The biochar produced by the project is intended for agricultural soil application. It can be applied directly or incorporated into soil-amendment products through blending with suitable agricultural inputs.
MatiBoostâ„¢ is LongStraw's biochar-enhanced soil amendment product, designed to connect durable carbon removal with agricultural use and build long-term climate resilience into smallholder farming communities across Odisha.
Sustainable Development Goals
- SDG 1 - No Poverty: The project creates local employment and supplementary income opportunities through biomass sourcing, processing, logistics and agricultural applications.
- SDG 2 - Zero Hunger: Biochar-based soil amendments improve water and nutrient retention, supporting healthier soils and more resilient agricultural production.
- SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being: By creating a productive use for rice husk, the project helps reduce open burning and associated exposure to particulate matter and air pollutants.
- SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy: Pyrolysis generates syngas reused as process energy, while surplus syngas provides an alternative fuel for nearby rice mills.
- SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth: Supports employment and technical skills across biomass aggregation, plant operations, logistics and agricultural applications.
- SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production: Rice husk that may otherwise be burned or underutilised is converted into biochar, bio-oil and syngas through a circular model.
- SDG 13 - Climate Action: Biochar produced through pyrolysis stores stable carbon in soils for the long term, creating durable removal while cutting waste emissions.
- SDG 15 - Life on Land: Biochar application improves soil structure, water retention and nutrient availability, creating healthier agricultural soils and resilient land systems.
